Viorel BOLOGAN: ''AEROFLOT" - 2003 WILL BE ENTERED IN THE GUINNESS RECORDS' BOOK"
The Moldavian grandmaster is well-known in the circle of chess professionals. In the age of 31, Viorel already won 28 International competitions, among which there are not only such prestigious open Swiss games, as New York open , where he won in 1997, but also the strong round tournaments from the 14th up to 16th category: Pekin-2000, Buenos-Aires-2000 (surpassed Anatoly Karpov and Nigel Short), Shanghai-2001, Paikovsky-2000 and 2001, Pamplona-2002& He also succeeded in the trainer's sphere. Bologan was by an assistant of the world FIDE champion, Ruslan Ponomariov at the last-year tournament, held in Linares. He also helped him to conduct press-conferences: Viorel freely speaks Spanish, English and French.
"Sport Express": Viorel, what's the secret of your success? It is not a joke to surpass 156 grandmasters.
"Sport Express": What are general impressions from Aeroflot -2003?
- The evidence of the tournament's power is the fact, that I occupied only the 20th place, according to the rating. The tournament will be entered in the Guinness records' book: one tournament had never contained 157 grandmasters before. This is also a great success of the tournament's director, Alexander Bakh, and of course, of the company Aeroflot - Russian airlines .
"Sport Express": You won the only pass to the super tournament, which will be held in Dortmund, where such superstars, as Vladimir Kramnik, Vishy Anand, Peter Leko, will participate& Have you had an opportunity to meet with them before?
- I had to. I have a positive score with Leko: I won one quick game in the play with him, one game was completed in a draw, and one more game with FIDE control we played with him at the Olympiad, held in Bled - in a draw. I failed in two micro matches in the play with Anand with an equal score 1.5:0.5. I conceded one game in the play with Kramnik, and two games were completed in a draw.
"Sport Express": What are expectations from Dortmund?
- I don't afraid of the players of the 1st ten. It will be certainly the high-level tournament, with very strong competitors, but I count on a fifty percent result.
"Sport Express": You play much in the open tournaments and at the same time successfully play at the strong round tournaments. Does the struggle in them differs from each other?
- There is a great difference! The competition is rather rigider in the open tournaments. It is necessary constantly to keep the tournament's situation, to risk.
"Sport Express": I remembered your article, published in the Chess week , headed so: Draws are unprofitable&
- Indeed. This is a specificity of open tournaments. In the round tournaments, especially in the elite ones, where all the participants have high ratings, the accent is done on the chess party, there is a calm measured play&
- I count exactly on the number 2660.
"Sport Express": In Dortmund it will be a good chance to reach the assessment equal to 2700&
- Ratings, points depend on the game you play.
"Sport Express": How do you assess chances of your recent ward, Ruslan Ponomariov at the match versus Kasparov?
- I treat Ruslan very good, but Kasparov is certainly the favorite.
"Sport Express": And in the struggle Kramnik - Leko?
- It is more difficult to give an answer there. Much will depend on the play itself. During the Olympiad, held in Bled, Leko showed rather poor game, Kramnik was rather modest during the play, held in Veik-an-Zee. But Kramnik still has the triumphant experience of struggle at the higher level. It is important.
"Sport Express": Have you an aim in chess?
- I am not going to become by the world champion. If I by accident enter in the first ten, I will be satisfied.
